I am evaluating SciChart for an upcoming project. I like what I see for WPF and a standard console.
My problem is that SciChart for the web only shows projects for Silver Light.
Silver Light is dead. Win RT is gasping its last breath. Everthing seems to be moving towards HTML5 / JS.
I need to be able to use the charts in a web browser as well as a console.
Is there new versions of SciChart coming out that addresses this issue.
You’re not wrong. Silverlight is indeed deprecated by Microsoft. In fact, as of v4 of SciChart, we are no longer supporting Silverlight either. We will continue to support WPF as we believe this is a very strong platform with plenty of life in it yet. We continue to do a lot of business in WPF and seeing lots of scientific software / financial software business applications being built with this technology. WinRT we haven’t looked at and while UWP is requested, I (like you) just don’t see it being as big a success as WPF is (but it might, if they can fix a few issues with the API).
We are also forward looking. We see what you see and we don’t want to get stuck in a dead-end. To that end in 2015 we invested in porting SciChart to Android and iOS (both of these are coming quite soon, and they’re brilliant). Why those platforms and not web? Surely web is the winner right? Well, yes, and no. It’s the winner for ubiquitous applications (particularly consumer apps, or business apps with lower graphical load) but for scientific apps that demand maximum performance, you can only have native code.
So what about Web? Well, what I want to see is SciChart on every platform, including the web. I have some great ideas how we could make it the-best-in-the-world, with some unique features over and above other HTML charts, but we have to do one thing at a time. Our roadmap for now is to release SciChart WPF v4 2D+3D, shortly followed by SciChart Android and iOS, and then with those platform ports under our belt, to work on SciChart HTML5.
In conclusion, it is on our roadmap, it’s not on our immediate release schedule. I can’t promise when it will be delivered, but to stay relevant and world-class, we do want to do it.
