Announcement: SciChart Marks a Decade of Collaboration with the Naval Nuclear Laboratory

SciChart is proud to commemorate ten years of collaboration with the Naval Nuclear Laboratory (NNL), encompassing Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory, Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory, and Fluor Marine Propulsion. This partnership has supported the advancement of data visualization within the U.S. Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program, a mission-critical initiative that underpins the safe and reliable operation of the Navy’s nuclear-powered fleet.

A Decade of Partnership

Since 2015, SciChart’s WPF Charting Library has been integrated into systems across the Naval Nuclear Laboratory. Over the past decade, these tools have provided high-performance data visualization capabilities essential for research, diagnostics, and monitoring within naval nuclear propulsion. Fluor Marine Propulsion, which manages and operates the laboratories, has leveraged SciChart’s technology to strengthen the ability of engineers and scientists to analyze complex data, optimize reactor performance, and support ongoing modernization efforts.

The Role of Data Visualization in Nuclear Propulsion

Data visualization is central to the work of the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program. By enabling engineers to monitor and interpret vast datasets in real time, it supports critical functions such as:

  • Performance analysis and optimization of naval reactors
  • Predictive maintenance and reliability studies across reactor lifecycles
  • Real-time safety monitoring and diagnostics
  • Simulation and modeling to support research and the design of next-generation naval reactors

These capabilities help ensure the Navy’s nuclear-powered submarines and aircraft carriers continue to operate with the highest standards of safety, efficiency, and reliability.

SciChart’s high-performance WPF Charting Library has empowered engineers and analysts within the NNPP with advanced data visualization tools, allowing for precise interpretation of datasets.

The Work of Bettus and Knolls Laboratories

The Naval Nuclear Laboratory comprises two principal research and engineering sites:

  • Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory (KAPL) in New York — focused on design, testing, and development of nuclear propulsion systems for the Navy.
  • Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory (BAPL) in Pennsylvania — specializing in reactor design, lifecycle support, and performance analysis.

Both laboratories play a vital role in maintaining and advancing naval nuclear propulsion. By integrating SciChart’s high-performance WPF charting tools, their teams have been able to accelerate diagnostics, conduct long-term operational studies, and model reactor behaviours with precision.

Looking Ahead

As SciChart reflects on this milestone, we remain committed to supporting the Naval Nuclear Laboratory and Fluor Marine Propulsion in their mission. Our decade-long collaboration underscores the importance of trusted, high-performance data visualization in programs where safety and reliability cannot be compromised. “We are honored to support one of the most demanding engineering programs in the world,” said Sheldon Vestey, Commercial Director at SciChart. This decade of collaboration reflects the trust placed in our technology, and we look forward to continuing our contribution to the Naval Nuclear Laboratory’s vital work.”

About the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program

The Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program (NNPP) is a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of Energy and the U.S. Navy. It is responsible for the research, design, operation, and maintenance of the Navy’s nuclear propulsion systems, ensuring that nuclear-powered submarines and aircraft carriers operate safely and effectively throughout their service lives.
